Introduction

You want to clean your home using only healthy products and mixtures. It makes sense — whether you have young children running around or pets who like to lick everything, you want to make sure that the cleaning products you use won’t be harmful.

As the makers of Soap Free Procyon®, we’ve gathered some strategies and tips to help you use your own green products to help you with your green cleaning.

Drain

A smelly drain makes doing the dishes a nasty chore. Solve the problem by making your own green cleaning mixture. Combine 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda, and ¼ a cup of cream of tartar. Mix them together, then dump less than half of the solution down the drain. Pour boiling water in to wash the mixture and grime out. Use more of the solution if necessary

Windows

We want our windows to shine, even if we don’t always have the time to clean them. However, once it really is time to clean your windows, or any glass surface, you can follow this simple recipe. Combine 2 ½ cups of water with ¼ a cup of vinegar. If you’d like, you can also use a few drops of a green liquid detergent. You can also substitute the vinegar for lemon juice if you prefer. Use a rag to apply the solution to your windows, and then use a dry cloth to finish.

Toilet

If you’re looking for a safe alternative to clean your toilet, try baking soda and vinegar as a toilet scrub. It makes sense to use green cleaning products in the bathroom, which doesn’t usually have great ventilation!

Oven

We use our ovens for so much, from pizzas to roasted veggies to birthday cakes and everything in between. Because ovens get so much use, it’s important to stay on top of their maintenance! Currently there aren’t too many green cleaning options for ovens, but there are a few. If you’re looking to make your own, try sprinkling baking soda, then sprinkling water on top, and then leaving it to soak overnight. The next morning, scrub and scour as much as you can.

Stovetop

If you have any stovetop spills that need to be taken care of, leave a layer of salt on top to break up the residue. If you have an electric stove, you can mix cinnamon and salt together to help hide the burn smell the next time you use the burner.

Floors

When it’s time to mop the floor, make sure you use a green cleaning solution, especially if you have little kids around! If you have tile floors, start with a bucket of warm water, and then add ½ a cup of baking soda to it. If your floors are ceramic, linoleum, or vinyl, use 1 gallon of warm water with 1 cup of vinegar. Of course, you can always use our fabulous Soap Free Procyon® Tile & Grout Cleaner! NOTE: these suggestions do not apply to wood floors.

Bonus tip: your grout deserves a green-cleaning treatment, too! Use a mixture of 1 part carbonated water to 1 part white vinegar and spray it on the moldy parts of the grout. If that doesn’t work, then add 2 parts baking soda to the mix. This will result in a thick paste, which you should let sit on the grout for at least 15 minutes before scrubbing it off.

Tea Kettle

Sometimes we forget to take care of our appliances, including our tea kettles. To descale your kettle and remove that buildup, you should use a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Pour it into the kettle, boil it, and then rinse the kettle out once it cools down some, but while it’s still warm. You can also swap out the white vinegar for lemon juice here, too.
